An important service for your Amarillo lawn is core aeration. This is the process of removing cores, or plugs, of soil and leaving them on top of the lawn to dissolve back into the ground. Our heavy clay soils start to compact and tighten up over time. Core aeration allows more air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the soil and turf root zone. It also creates more pore space in the soil for grass roots to grow and develop. The service can be performed in the Spring and/or Fall and is also a great time to overseed, fertilize, and/or apply a soil amendment like gypsum. Core aerating is also useful for areas that experience fungus issues. However, aerating the lawn will potentially open up the lawn to weed pressure so be sure to aerate when the lawn is actively growing. If you’re not going to overseed you may consider applying pre-emergent weed control before or shortly after aerating. DIY homeowners who want to aerate their lawn can typically expect to rent an aerator machine for around $40 or more and be done with the process in a couple of hours. This is one service that I highly recommend because it will promote a thick and healthy lawn all season long.
